Data Sources
Leif works with data, maps, imagery and search results from third parties ("Third-Party Data" in our Terms of Service at https://thornstreet.com/terms-of-service): commercial providers, government agencies, research institutions and open-data projects. Third-Party Data is licensed to Thorn Street, Inc., not sold, and comes with its providers' terms, which can limit how it may be stored, combined, shown and shared. Thorn Street chooses, adds, replaces and stops using providers at its discretion.
This page sets out what those terms mean for you. Under our Terms of Service, you agree to follow them when you use Third-Party Data in Leif and in what you make with it. Leif is built to follow them for you where it can.
For all Third-Party Data
- Keep the credits. Leif shows the credits a source requires: on maps, and in the sources it names in each thread's project log. Keep them when you share or publish a map, file or Output, and follow any licence they name.
- Use it as Leif does. Do not extract, bulk-download, cache or resell Third-Party Data beyond what Leif does for you, or use it to build a competing data product (see our Acceptable Use Policy).
- Check before relying on it. Third-Party Data may be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Charts, forecasts, live readings and routes are not for navigation or safety decisions.
- Mind the people in it. Public records and web pages can include information about people. Use it lawfully and as our Acceptable Use Policy requires.
- Web content belongs to its owners. Web pages and search results Leif finds keep their own copyrights and terms. Do not assume you may republish them.
Data with terms you must follow
Two sources come with terms that limit what you may do with what Leif makes from them.
Amazon Location Service (data from HERE and others)
Some of Leif's satellite, terrain, traffic and transit maps, address and place lookups, and routes and travel times come from Amazon Location Service. Under AWS's terms (AWS Service Terms, section 82, https://aws.amazon.com/service-terms/):
- Maps that use this data must show the credit "© AWS, HERE". Leif adds it.
- Map images may not be cached or saved outside the map.
- Routes and travel times may be kept for at most 30 days. Leif deletes them from your threads after 30 days.
- HERE routes may be shown only over Amazon Location's own maps, or with no map.
- This data may not be combined with OpenStreetMap data in a way that would bring it under OpenStreetMap's licence. Keep the two in separate files and layers.
OpenStreetMap
Much of Leif's map data comes from OpenStreetMap, which is © OpenStreetMap contributors and available under the Open Database License (ODbL). If you publicly use a database you made from OpenStreetMap data, the ODbL requires you to credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors" and to make that database available under the ODbL. See https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright.
What providers receive
When Leif queries a provider for you, the provider receives the query, which can contain what your request contains, such as an address, a search or the area of a map. When your browser shows a map, it loads map images directly from the map's provider, which receives your IP address. Our Privacy Policy at https://thornstreet.com/privacy-policy explains this, and the providers that process personal data for us are listed at https://thornstreet.com/subprocessors.
Changes
If we start using a source whose terms limit what you may do with what Leif makes from it, we will add it to this page. A provider's terms apply to its data for as long as Leif uses it, and continue to apply to data you got from it before a change. Questions: general@thornstreet.com.
